Sigmund Freud explained his model of the psyche and personality. Freud, along with his family, left Austria and shifted to London in 1938 due to the arrival of Nazis. However, it’s interesting to see how Pi’s id (survival instincts) is powerful enough to take charge over the superego and ends up killing the fish for the two of them. In 1923, Freud elaborated on the three parts of the human psyche, i.e., id, ego, and superego, in his publication The Ego and the Id. He subconsciously knows that he should not be killing a live species due to religion, and also knows that he should not be eating fish (he is a vegetarian because of his religion). 1 The superego provides guidelines for making judgments. The superego holds the internalized moral standards and ideals that we acquire from our parents and society (our sense of right and wrong). According to Freud, the superego begins to emerge at around age five. In this situation, his superego makes him hesitant to kill it. The Superego The last component of personality to develop is the superego. This could be the hidden meaning for Pi’s natural instincts.Īnother example is when Pi struggled with killing the fish for Richard Parker and himself to eat. In both the novel and the movie, Pi tells us that Richard Parker is the reason why he had a chance to survive. Richard Parker is Pi’s survival instincts (id), which we are all born with the moment we are born. Richard Parker is the one who kills the hyena, which is parallel to Pi killing the cook (another version of the story he tells to Japanese reports at the very end of the movie). Anderson’s new film is a beautiful character study examining the inner workings of human. The three main characters can be viewed metaphorically in terms of Freud’s id, ego and super ego. Some researchers believe that Richard Parker, the tiger, is actually a symbolism of Pi’s id. Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film The Master, set in 1950, examines dueling forces of the human psyche. This also shows what imbalance of personalities can do to us. There was no superego or ego that could have stopped it from killing the zebra. The second part of the iceberg, the ego, found in both the unconscious and. The id, the part of the iceberg completely submerged in the unconscious, is driven by one’s libido and consists of the inherited components of one’s personality, including one’s sexual instinct. The hyena on the lifeboat is an example of id, because of how it killed the zebra due to hunger. It consists of three parts - the id, the ego and the superego.
